Why Do We Feel Guilty for Resting?

Blogging

Sometimes your body isn’t asking you to do more. It may be asking you to pay attention to what you’ve been carrying.

I don’t know about you, but have you ever sat down in the middle of the day and almost immediately started thinking about everything you should be doing?

There’s laundry somewhere. An email you haven’t answered. Something needs to be cleaned. Someone needs a phone call. There’s always one more thing that could be done.

Sometimes we finally give ourselves permission to rest, but our minds don’t get the message. We’re sitting down physically while mentally going through tomorrow’s to-do list.

I’ve been thinking about this lately because we’ve entered fall, and everything around us is beginning to change its rhythm. The days are getting shorter. The temperatures are changing. Nature is beginning another cycle.

Maybe this is a good time for us to check in with ourselves too.

There Is More Than One Kind of Tired

Sometimes you’re physically tired and need sleep.

But have you ever gotten plenty of sleep and still felt exhausted?

You can be mentally tired from making decisions all day. You can be emotionally tired from worrying about someone you love. You can be drained from a relationship, a stressful situation or months of pushing yourself without really stopping.

And from an energetic perspective, I believe we can also become tired from everything we’ve been carrying that we haven’t dealt with yet.

Old worries. Fear. Anger. Resentment. Other people’s problems. Situations we keep replaying in our minds. Things we know need to change but haven’t quite been ready to face.

Sometimes we’re carrying so much that we don’t even realize how heavy it has become.

Of course, persistent or unusual fatigue should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional. But alongside caring for our physical bodies, I think it’s worth paying attention to our emotional and energetic well-being too.

Rest Doesn’t Always Mean Sleep

This is something I think we forget.

Sometimes rest means sitting outside without your phone for twenty minutes. It might mean saying no because you genuinely don’t have the energy to say yes.

Maybe it’s taking a bath, reading, praying, meditating or going for a quiet walk.

And sometimes rest can actually be fun.

We talked recently about how easy it is to stop doing things simply because they make us happy. Maybe what your spirit needs is dinner with a friend who makes you laugh. Maybe it’s baking something, working in the garden, listening to music or watching a funny movie.

Not everything you do for yourself has to accomplish something.

Sometimes feeling good is enough.

But What If Rest Isn’t Fixing It?

This is where I want you to pay attention.

If you’ve been slowing down and still feel like something is “off,” don’t immediately assume you need to push yourself harder.

Instead, get curious.

What have you been carrying?

Has something been bothering you that you keep pushing aside? Are you holding onto anger from something that happened months ago? Are you worrying constantly about someone else’s life? Have you been feeling more emotional, scattered or overwhelmed than usual?

Sometimes slowing down gives us enough quiet to finally notice what has been sitting underneath all of the busyness.

And once we notice it, we have an opportunity to decide whether we want to continue carrying it.

Fall Naturally Makes Us Think About Change

I love that we’re entering this season right now because fall gives us such a beautiful visual reminder that change doesn’t always have to be something we fear.

The trees don’t fight to hold onto every leaf.

There is a time for growth, and there is also a time to let things go.

I think the same can be true for us.

As we move further into this new season, there may be emotions, beliefs, habits, worries or old energy that simply don’t belong where you’re going next.

You don’t have to figure all of that out today.

Just start noticing.

Over the next few days, pay attention to what keeps coming up. Notice the thoughts that keep repeating. Notice where you feel resistance. Notice what makes you feel heavy and what makes you feel lighter.

Those things can tell us a lot.

Before You Move Forward, Make Some Room

Next week, I’m going to be talking much more about Clearing & Activation and why I believe regularly clearing the energetic clutter we’ve accumulated can be such an important part of our healing journey.

But for now, I don’t want you to do anything except pay attention.

What are you tired of carrying?

What keeps resurfacing?

What would you like to feel differently about as you move through the rest of this year? And what might happen if you finally gave yourself permission to put some of it down?

Rest when your body asks you to rest. Nourish yourself. Laugh. Spend time with people you love. Take care of your physical health.

But also remember that sometimes caring for ourselves means looking a little deeper at what we’ve been carrying inside.

Maybe this season isn’t asking you to do more.

Maybe it’s asking you to make room for what’s next.

Have a beautiful and blessed week.
