What Happens When You Stop Trying to Fix Everyone?

Blogging

Sometimes loving someone means allowing them to walk their own path.

Have you ever found yourself worrying about someone else’s life more than they seem to be worrying about it?

Maybe it’s one of your children, your spouse, a friend, a sibling or someone you care deeply about. You can see the problem. You can see what they’re doing. You may even be able to see exactly what would make their situation better.

So you give advice. You offer help. You make suggestions. You check in. You remind them. And when none of that works, you try again.

I think many of us do this because we genuinely love people. We don’t want to watch someone we care about struggle when we believe we can help them. But there comes a point when helping someone can turn into carrying something that was never ours to carry.

You Can Love Someone Without Carrying Their Problems

This can be a difficult lesson, especially if you’re naturally a caretaker.

When someone we love is hurting, our first instinct is often to make the hurt go away. If they’re making a decision we don’t agree with, we want to change their mind. If they keep repeating the same pattern, we want to show them what they’re doing.

But what if that experience is part of their journey?

One thing I’ve learned through spiritual work is that everyone has their own lessons to learn. Sometimes the very experience we’re trying to rescue someone from may be the experience that finally teaches them something they couldn’t learn any other way.

That doesn’t mean we become cold or stop caring.

It means we recognize the difference between supporting someone and trying to live their life for them.

Not Everyone Is Ready When You Are

Have you ever given someone really good advice only to watch them completely ignore it?

Then six months later, they come back and tell you they finally figured something out, and it’s almost exactly what you told them six months ago!

It can be frustrating, but I think there’s an important lesson in that too.

People hear things when they’re ready to hear them.

You cannot force someone to heal before they’re ready. You cannot make another person leave a situation, change a habit, forgive someone, set a boundary or see themselves differently just because you can see what needs to happen.

They have to arrive there themselves.

And sometimes our constant attempts to convince them only leave us exhausted.

Pay Attention to What You’re Carrying

There is also an energetic side to constantly trying to fix everyone around us.

Think about how much energy it takes to worry about another person’s choices all day. You’re having conversations with them in your head. You’re imagining everything that could go wrong. You’re trying to figure out what they should do next.

Meanwhile, they’re out living their life, and you’re carrying the stress of it.

Over time, that can become emotionally exhausting.

Sometimes we become so focused on what everyone else needs that we stop asking ourselves a very important question:

What do I need?

Maybe some of the energy you’ve been pouring into everyone else needs to come back to you.

Letting Go Doesn’t Mean You Don’t Care

I think this is the part people struggle with most.

Stepping back can feel selfish.

It can feel like you’re abandoning someone or saying you don’t care anymore. But there is a big difference between abandoning someone and allowing them to take responsibility for their own life.

You can listen without solving.

You can love without rescuing.

You can offer advice without needing someone to take it.

You can pray for someone without trying to control the outcome.

And you can be there when they truly need you without making their problems your full-time responsibility. There is a lot of freedom in that, for both of you.

Give People Room to Find Their Own Way

Think about your own life for a moment.

Some of your greatest lessons probably came from things you wish you could have avoided. Maybe you stayed in a situation too long. Trusted the wrong person. Made a bad decision. Took the wrong job. Spent money you shouldn’t have spent. Ignored advice someone gave you.

At the time, someone else may have desperately wanted to save you from that experience.

But you learned something from it.

Other people deserve the opportunity to learn from their lives too.

We can walk beside them. We can encourage them. We can offer wisdom when they ask for it.

But ultimately, their path belongs to them.

If you’ve been carrying someone else’s problems lately, maybe this week is a good time to loosen your grip a little.

Ask yourself whether you’re truly helping, or whether you’ve taken responsibility for something that belongs to someone else.

Then give yourself permission to put some of that weight down.

You don’t have to stop loving them.

You just have to remember that loving someone and fixing someone are not the same thing.
