When Life Feels Quiet, Don’t Mistake It for Nothing Happening

Blogging

Some of life’s greatest transformations begin long before we can see the results.

Have you ever gone through a season where nothing seems to be happening You pray. You reflect. You continue doing your best to make wise decisions. You trust that you’re moving in the right direction, yet everything around you feels… quiet.

There are no obvious signs.

No big breakthroughs.

No dramatic changes.

Just an unsettling feeling that you’re standing still while everyone else seems to be moving forward.

If you’ve ever felt this way, I want to encourage you today with a different perspective.

What if the quiet isn’t empty?

What if it’s sacred?

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that Spirit often does some of the deepest work during the seasons when we think nothing is happening. We tend to measure progress by what we can see with our eyes. We look for immediate results, quick answers, and visible signs that we’re heading in the right direction.

But spiritual growth doesn’t always happen that way.

Think about a seed that has just been planted.

For weeks, sometimes even months, nothing appears to be happening above the ground. If someone didn’t know better, they might assume the seed wasn’t growing at all. Yet beneath the surface, an incredible transformation is taking place. Tiny roots are stretching deeper into the soil. Strength is being developed where no one can see it. The foundation is being established long before the first green sprout ever reaches the sunlight.

Our lives often unfold in much the same way.

There are seasons when Spirit is growing roots instead of branches.

Those seasons can be difficult because we naturally want to see evidence that our efforts matter. We want reassurance that our prayers are being heard. We want confirmation that we’re on the right path. Yet sometimes the very silence that makes us uncomfortable is actually creating the space needed for something beautiful to emerge.

Have you noticed how uncomfortable our world has become with waiting?

We’re encouraged to move faster, accomplish more, and fill every quiet moment with activity. If something doesn’t happen quickly, we assume we’ve failed or that we’ve somehow missed an opportunity. But nature doesn’t rush, and neither does Spirit.

Everything has its season.

A flower doesn’t bloom because we demand it to.

The sun doesn’t rise earlier because we’re impatient.

The tides don’t hurry because someone is watching the clock.

Creation follows its own rhythm, and perhaps we’re invited to do the same.

Maybe the quiet season you’re experiencing isn’t a sign that you’ve been forgotten.

Maybe it’s a season of preparation.

Preparation often feels invisible.

You may be learning lessons that will help you navigate what comes next. You may be developing patience, resilience, wisdom, or compassion in ways you don’t yet recognize. The conversations you’re having, the books you’re reading, the people you’re meeting, and even the challenges you’re facing may all be quietly preparing you for opportunities that haven’t arrived yet.

One day you’ll look back and realize that what seemed like an ordinary season was actually laying the foundation for something extraordinary. I’ve seen this happen so many times. People often tell me, “Everything changed so quickly.”

But when we look closer, it usually didn’t happen quickly at all. The visible change may have seemed sudden, but it was built upon months or even years of quiet growth that no one else could see.

The same may be true for you. If you’re feeling discouraged because life seems slower than you’d hoped, take a deep breath. Give yourself permission to stop measuring your progress by how much is happening around you. Instead, ask yourself a different question.

How am I growing on the inside?

You might discover that you’re responding to situations with more patience than you once did. Maybe you’ve become more compassionate toward others. Perhaps you’re setting healthier boundaries or learning to trust your intuition in ways that once felt impossible.

Those changes matter.

In fact, they often matter far more than the accomplishments we tend to celebrate.

As you move through this week, I encourage you to spend a few moments appreciating the quiet instead of resisting it. Step outside for a walk. Sit with your morning coffee without reaching for your phone. Watch the sunrise or listen to the birds. Notice how much wisdom exists in the simple rhythms of creation.

Spirit doesn’t always speak through dramatic moments.

Sometimes Spirit whispers.

And whispers require us to become still enough to hear them.

If life feels unusually quiet right now, don’t rush to fill the silence.

Allow yourself to rest in it.

Allow yourself to trust it.

Allow yourself to believe that even when you can’t see visible progress, something meaningful may still be unfolding beneath the surface.

Growth isn’t always loud.

Healing isn’t always dramatic.

Transformation often begins long before anyone notices the change. Including you.

So this week, instead of asking, “Why isn’t anything happening?” try asking, “What is Spirit quietly growing within me?”

The answer may surprise you.
