Why Looking Up at the Night Sky Can Change Your Perspective

There Is Something Healing About Looking Beyond Yourself

The other evening I stepped outside just as the sun was beginning to set. The air was still warm from the summer day, but everything around me had started to become quiet. As I stood there for a few moments, I found myself looking up at the sky. Before long, the first few stars began appearing, and it reminded me of something I think we all need from time to time.

Perspective.

It’s amazing how easy it is to become consumed by what’s happening right in front of us. We think about the bills that need to be paid, the doctor’s appointment coming up, family responsibilities, work, relationships and all the little things that fill our minds every day. Before we know it, our world can begin feeling very small because all we can see are the problems we’re trying to solve. Then something interesting happens when we look up.

The sky reminds us that there is something much bigger than ourselves.

Creation Has Always Been Speaking

I believe one of the greatest gifts Spirit has given us is creation itself. We don’t always have to search for profound lessons because so many of them are happening all around us every single day. The changing seasons remind us that life was never meant to stay the same forever. The sunrise teaches us that every day offers another beginning. Even the stars have something to teach us.

Those same stars have been shining for generations.

They were there long before we arrived.

They’ll continue shining long after we’re gone.

Yet every night they faithfully appear exactly when they’re supposed to.

They don’t compare themselves to the moon.

They don’t compete with one another.

They simply shine where they were created to shine.

I think there’s something beautiful about that.

We Weren’t Meant to Carry the Weight of the Whole World

Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves that we forget we’re human.

We think we have to solve every problem immediately.

We believe we should have every answer.

We carry responsibilities that were never meant to rest on our shoulders.

Then we wonder why we’re exhausted.

One of the things I love about spending time outside is that nature has a way of gently reminding us that we’re part of something much bigger. The trees continue growing one season at a time. The birds don’t seem worried about tomorrow while they’re singing today. The stars don’t rush to appear before darkness arrives. Everything unfolds according to its own rhythm.

Perhaps we need that reminder too.

Not everything has to happen today.

Not every question needs an immediate answer.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is simply remember that we don’t have to carry the entire world by ourselves.

Summer Invites Us to Slow Down

Even though summer can be one of the busiest times of the year, I also think it’s one of the easiest seasons to reconnect with creation. The evenings are longer. The mornings seem a little quieter. There are more opportunities to sit outside, watch the sunset or simply enjoy the beauty that’s been surrounding us all along.

Those moments may seem small, but I don’t believe they are.

Every time we step away from the constant noise of everyday life, we create space for our nervous system to settle. We begin noticing things we would have otherwise missed. We breathe a little deeper. Our thoughts slow down. Sometimes the answers we’ve been searching so hard to find begin appearing naturally because we’ve finally given ourselves enough space to receive them.

I’ve often found that Spirit doesn’t always speak louder.

Sometimes we simply become quieter.

A Simple Invitation

As you move through this week, I want to encourage you to spend a few minutes outside one evening. Watch the sunset if you can. Stay outside long enough for the first stars to appear. Leave your phone inside if possible. Don’t go outside looking for a profound spiritual experience or expecting every question in your life to be answered.

Simply notice.

Notice the colors in the sky.

Notice the breeze.

Notice the sounds around you.

Notice how much beauty exists without asking anything from you.

Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as remembering that we are part of a creation far greater than ourselves.

And sometimes all it takes is looking up.
