Natural Remedies for Common Winter Ailments:

Herbal Medicine & Plant-Based Healing Recipes for DIYers

Winter often brings colds, coughs, seasonal fatigue, and right now our schools are running rampant with influenza A but nature provides powerful remedies to keep you feeling your best. Here are some effective natural remedies for common winter ailments using herbal medicine and plant-based healing. Each recipe is perfect for DIYers (which I know a lot of my followers are) who want to create their own wellness blends at home.
Here are a few good ones for the season.

Ginger Lemon Honey Tea for Colds

Benefits: Soothes sore throats, boosts immunity, and reduces inflammation.

Ingredients:

1-inch fresh ginger root, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

2 tablespoons raw honey

3 cups hot water

Instructions:

Boil the ginger slices in water for 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and add lemon slices.

Let cool slightly, strain, then stir in honey.

Drink warm to soothe your throat and clear congestion.

Herbal Chest Rub for Cough Relief

Benefits: Opens airways, eases coughs, and relieves chest tightness.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup coconut oil

10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

5 drops peppermint essential oil

5 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

Melt coconut oil gently in a double boiler.

Remove from heat and stir in the essential oils.

Pour into a small jar and let it cool until solid or semi solid.

Massage onto the chest as needed. I rub it on my throat also.

Elderberry Syrup for Immune Support

Benefits: Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, fights cold and flu symptoms.

Ingredients:

1 cup dried elderberries

4 cups water

1 cinnamon stick

1 teaspoon cloves

1-inch ginger root, sliced

1 cup raw honey

Instructions:

Simmer elderberries, water, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger for 45 minutes.

Strain the mixture and allow it to cool.

Stir in honey once cooled.

Store in a glass jar and take 1 tablespoon daily.

Herbal Steam for Sinus Congestion

Benefits: Clears nasal passages and soothes inflamed sinuses.

Ingredients:

4 cups boiling water

1 tablespoon dried peppermint

1 tablespoon dried eucalyptus leaves

1 tablespoon dried chamomile

Instructions:

Place herbs in a large bowl.

Pour boiling water over the herbs.

Lean over the bowl, cover your head with a towel, and breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes.

Plant-Based Immunity Soup

Benefits: Nourishes the body, provides warmth, and supports immune health.

Ingredients:

1 onion, chopped

3 garlic cloves, minced

1-inch ginger root, minced

4 cups vegetable broth (Organic if possible) or I use bone broth

1 cup kale, chopped

1 cup mushrooms, sliced

1 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon miso paste

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Sauté onion, garlic, and ginger in a pot until fragrant.

Add vegetable broth, turmeric, mushrooms, and kale.

Simmer for 20 minutes.

Stir in miso paste after removing from heat.

Serve warm.

Tips for Winter Wellness:

Stay hydrated with warm herbal teas or water with lemon.

Get plenty of rest to support healing.

Incorporate vitamin C-rich foods like oranges and bell peppers.

Practice regular hand washing to prevent illness.

These natural remedies can support your health throughout the winter season. Always consult a healthcare professional for serious conditions and ensure herbs are safe for your unique health needs. I always asked the pharmacist if herbs I used on my caregiving clients would react with any of their medications before giving them my remedies. They were super helpful.
