Your Home May Be Affecting Your Energy More Than You Realize

Have You Ever Noticed How Your Home Affects Your Energy?

Sometimes the space around us has more to do with how we feel than we realize.

I was thinking about something the other day. Have you ever walked into someone’s home and immediately felt comfortable? You might not even know the person very well, but there’s something about the atmosphere that makes you want to sit down, have a cup of tea, and stay awhile.

Then there are other places where you walk through the door and almost immediately feel uncomfortable. You can’t necessarily explain why. Maybe the room feels chaotic, maybe there’s tension between the people living there, or maybe something about the environment just doesn’t feel welcoming.

I think most of us have experienced this at one time or another.

Our homes are supposed to be the places where we can relax, feel safe, and recharge after dealing with everything happening in the outside world. But sometimes, without even realizing it, our homes become another place where we’re surrounded by stress, unfinished business, and reminders of everything we need to do.

And I wonder how often we stop to think about what that does to us.

Your Home Holds More Than Furniture

Think about how much life happens inside the walls of your home.

There are celebrations, laughter, family dinners, holidays, and wonderful memories. But there are also disagreements, difficult conversations, financial worries, illnesses, disappointments, and times when life feels overwhelming.

Our homes are where we experience some of our greatest joys and some of our most challenging moments.

From a spiritual perspective, I’ve always believed that the atmosphere of a home can reflect some of what the people living there have been experiencing. And even from a practical standpoint, we know our surroundings can influence how comfortable, distracted, or stressed we feel.

Have you ever noticed how much better you feel after cleaning out a closet, opening the windows, or rearranging a room?

Nothing about your actual circumstances may have changed, but somehow the space feels different.

And sometimes, you feel different too.

I think there’s something important in that.

Sometimes We Get Used to the Clutter

Now, I’m not just talking about having too many things sitting on the kitchen counter. Although, I don’t know about you, but I think most of us have at least one drawer or closet we’d rather not talk about! I’m also talking about the things we keep around us that remind us of difficult experiences.

Maybe it’s a box of belongings from a relationship that ended years ago. Maybe it’s paperwork connected to a stressful situation. Perhaps it’s something you inherited that you feel obligated to keep, even though you don’t particularly like it.

Sometimes we hold onto things because they remind us of people we love, and that’s beautiful. But other times, we hold onto things because we feel guilty getting rid of them.

And then there’s the everyday clutter that builds up when we’re busy taking care of everyone and everything else. We get so accustomed to seeing it that we hardly notice it anymore. Until one day, we finally clean something out and realize how much lighter the room feels.

I think our emotional and spiritual lives can be like that too. We can become so accustomed to carrying certain feelings or memories that we stop noticing how much space they’re taking up.

Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference

One of the things I love about this time of year is how naturally it encourages us to make our homes a little cozier.

Maybe you bring out your favorite blanket, light a candle, put some fall flowers on the table, or start making those wonderful soups and meals that seem especially good when the weather gets cooler.

I love how something as simple as the smell of cinnamon or a pot of soup simmering on the stove can bring back memories.

Our senses are powerful that way.

Music can change the feeling of a room. Natural light can make a space feel more inviting. A clean kitchen counter can make the morning seem a little less overwhelming. Even having a comfortable chair where you can sit quietly for a few minutes can make a difference.

You don’t have to redecorate your entire home or spend a lot of money to create a more peaceful environment. Sometimes it’s just about being intentional.

What do you want to feel when you walk through your front door?

Do you want to feel calm? Welcomed? Comfortable? Inspired? Safe?

Then think about one small thing you could change to help create more of that feeling.

What About the Energy We Bring Home?

Here’s another part of this that I think deserves some attention.

We spend so much time thinking about the energy of other people and places, but what about the energy we’re bringing into our own homes?

Think about the days when you’ve had a difficult conversation, watched upsetting news, dealt with someone who was angry, or spent hours worrying about something you couldn’t control.

Sometimes we carry all of that right through the front door.

Then we wonder why we can’t relax.

We sit down to watch television, but our minds are still replaying what happened earlier. We go to bed, but we’re thinking about tomorrow. We wake up and immediately start worrying about the same things all over again.

Before long, our homes become places where we’re physically present but mentally somewhere else. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that we need to give ourselves opportunities to transition out of the stress of the day.

For some people, that might mean changing clothes and taking a shower when they get home. For others, it might be sitting quietly, saying a prayer, listening to music, or stepping outside for some fresh air. And for those of us who practice energy work, it may also mean intentionally clearing and refreshing the energy of our surroundings.

The important thing is recognizing that we don’t have to bring every difficult moment of the day into the rest of our evening.

Creating Space for Better Energy

This actually connects with something we’ve been talked about for the October Clearing & Activation. We’ve been focused on clearing the emotional and energetic heaviness that accumulated during September so we can move through October with a healthier, more supportive mindset and spiritual intention.

And while our Clearing & Activation work focused on our personal energetic well-being, I think it’s also a wonderful reminder to pay attention to the environments we’re creating around ourselves.

If we’re working on feeling more peaceful, perhaps we can make our homes a little more peaceful too.

If we’re trying to let go of old emotional baggage, maybe there’s a drawer, closet, or room filled with things we’ve been meaning to sort through.

If we’re inviting more joy into our lives, maybe we should surround ourselves with a few more things that genuinely make us happy.

I don’t believe we have to change everything overnight. In fact, I think trying to do too much at once is often what keeps us from getting started.

But small changes have a way of building on one another.

And sometimes, clearing a little physical space can become a meaningful reminder of the emotional and spiritual space we’re trying to create within ourselves.

Make Your Home a Place That Nourishes You

As we move through the rest of October, I’d love for you to spend a little time thinking about your home.

Not whether it’s perfectly decorated or whether everything is spotless. I’m talking about how it makes you feel.

Is there a room where you naturally feel peaceful? Is there a place you avoid because it reminds you of something difficult? Are there things you’ve been keeping out of obligation rather than love?

Maybe there’s an area you’ve been wanting to clean out for months. Or perhaps you’ve simply been so busy that you haven’t taken time to enjoy the home you’ve worked so hard to create.

This week, choose one small thing.

Open the windows and let some fresh air in. Put on your favorite music. Clear off a table. Bring home some flowers. Sit down with a cup of tea and enjoy the quiet. Say a prayer over your home and the people who live there.

And if you feel drawn to it, take a few minutes to set an intention for the kind of atmosphere you’d like to create. I think sometimes we forget that our homes don’t just need to function for us. They should also be places where we can enjoy living.

After all, we spend so much of our lives taking care of everything outside of ourselves. Shouldn’t the place we come home to be somewhere that helps take care of us, too?

Have a beautiful and blessed week!
