True wellness means paying attention to your physical, emotional, and energetic needs.
Have you ever had one of those days when you know you’re tired, but somehow sleep doesn’t seem to be the only thing you need?
You can get eight hours of sleep and still wake up feeling drained. You can take a day off and still not feel refreshed. Sometimes we immediately assume we need more rest, but I’ve learned over the years that wellness is much bigger than how many hours we sleep or what we eat.
We are physical, emotional, mental and energetic beings, and I believe all of those parts of us need attention.
Your Body Is Always Communicating With You
Our bodies are pretty amazing when you think about it. They’re constantly giving us information. We feel hunger when we need nourishment, thirst when we need water and fatigue when we need rest. But there are other signals we aren’t always as good at listening to.
Stress can affect how we sleep, how our bodies feel and even how we interact with the people around us. When we’ve been overwhelmed for too long, we may become irritable, distracted or simply feel like we don’t have anything left to give.
Of course, ongoing or unusual physical symptoms should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional. Energy work isn’t a replacement for medical care. But I also believe wellness includes asking ourselves what else may be happening in our lives.
Are you resting enough? Are you eating foods that nourish you? Are you moving your body? Are you spending any time outside? Are you constantly surrounded by stress? When was the last time you did something simply because it made you happy?
Sometimes we become so busy taking care of everyone else that we don’t notice how long it’s been since we’ve taken care of ourselves.
Wellness Isn’t Just About the Physical Body
I think this is where many people miss an important piece of healing.
You can eat healthy foods, take vitamins, exercise and do all of the things you’re “supposed” to do, but if you’re constantly carrying anger, worry, resentment or emotional stress, you may still not feel your best.
Our emotional well-being matters too.
Think about how different your body feels after you’ve laughed until your stomach hurts compared with how it feels after a stressful conversation. Think about how relaxed you can feel after spending an afternoon with someone you love or sitting outside on a beautiful day.
Those experiences affect us.
This is why I believe healing needs to look at the whole person rather than focusing on only one part.
Small Things Add Up
The good news is that supporting your well-being doesn’t always require completely changing your life.
Sometimes it’s drinking another glass of water instead of another cup of coffee. It might mean taking a walk after dinner, going to bed a little earlier or putting your phone down and sitting outside for fifteen minutes.
Maybe it’s finally setting a boundary you’ve needed for months.
Maybe it’s spending time in prayer or meditation.
Maybe it’s laughing with a friend.
Maybe it’s simply giving yourself permission to have a day when you don’t accomplish very much.
None of these things sound revolutionary, but I’ve found that the things we do consistently often matter more than the big changes we make once in a while.
Don’t Wait Until You’re Completely Depleted
One thing I wish more people understood is that self-care isn’t something we should only think about when we’re completely exhausted.
We maintain our homes. We maintain our cars. We make appointments, clean things, replace things and take care of problems before they become bigger.
Why wouldn’t we give ourselves that same attention?
Healing doesn’t always mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes healing is simply maintenance. It’s checking in with yourself and noticing what needs a little more attention before your body or emotions have to start shouting to get you to listen.
As you move through this week, take a moment to check in with yourself.
How does your body feel?
How are you sleeping?
What have you been eating?
How much stress have you been carrying?
And just as importantly, when was the last time you felt genuinely peaceful?
You don’t have to fix everything today.
Choose one small thing that supports your physical, emotional or energetic well-being and begin there.
Your body carries you through every experience, every relationship, every challenge and every beautiful moment of your life.
Take care of it.
Listen to it.
And remember that caring for yourself is part of the healing journey too.
Have a beautiful and blessed week.
