The Healing Benefits of Rose Water

Lifestyle

Rose Water is making a strong comeback. You see it everywhere but often it is a cheap knock off of the real thing and can be quite costly. The good news is, you can easily make your own and it is fairly easy to make and quite inexpensive.

Single Batch

Ingredients:

-3 cups rose petals

-5 cups distilled water

-2 to 4 Rose drops essential oil depending on how strong you would like it

Step 1: Rinse the rose petals in distilled water

Step 2: Bring 3 C. of water to a boil

Step 3: Add the petals to the water and let simmer for 3-4 hours ( best done on low in a crock pot and check the water level a couple times). When made on the stove it is to easy for the water to evaporate and leave you with a burnt mess. If you do it on the stove top please use a double boiler

Step 4: Strain the water and add your essential oil

Large Batch

Step 1: Fill slow cooker 3/4 full of washed rose petals

Step 2: Cover with distilled water

Step 3: Put the lid on and set it on high.

Step 4: Cook the petals until they’ve completely lost their color.

****You can also make this on the stove top but it is touchy, make sure the pot is non-reactive, and that the water never quite reaches a boil. You will really have to keep an eye on it. It is best to use a double boiler. Also I don’t like that the water evaporates so you may have to add more, which dilutes the concentration of the rose water.

Step 5: Put the mixture through a fine mesh wire strainer, you don’t want rose petals left in the water. (Strain it until you get everything out, or until it is just clear liquid).

Step 6: Pour the rose water into a sterilized jar or sterilized glass mister.

Keep refrigerated

You can also use it in a mister and use it as a face spray, linen spray, hair conditioner, moisturizer or air freshener

As a face spray rose water will assist in maintaining the pH balance of your skin while controlling excess oil and reducing redness, acne, eczema and skin irritation or inflammation. It will help hydrate and moisturize the skin or is great for assisting with scars, cuts and wounds.

Rose water has anti fungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties so it will help regenerate and strengthen your skin tissue, as well as reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It will also enhance your mood and assist with anxiety and stress.

Rose water has long been used to moisturize and nourish the hair and is a great treatment for your scalp as it will reduce inflammation and dandruff. It is known as a natural conditioner and is said to stimulate hair growth.

My grandmother used to spritz it on her face, pillow and hair before bed each night and then over her makeup in the morning.  She would also use a cup of rose water as a final rinse on her hair after she washed it.

Rose water was used as far back as the Egyptians and if it was good enough for Cleopatra I guess it is good enough for me. LOL. Enjoy!

P.S. If the thought of making your own rose water just is not appealing to you.
