Every one of us wrestles with that question. Is that still, small whisper, that nudge, gut feeling, or knowing truly coming from God or Spirit?

This is probably the most asked question that I get from students and clients.

Know this, you were made to hear from God, to be connected to spirit, to be led. It is our birthright.

Be Aware! That is the key.

Do you truly BELIEVE that God wants to talk to you or wants you to hear from spirit or for you to be spirit led?

More often than not you feel unworthy and allow doubt to be the obstacle standing in the way of connection. Even if you have doubt, that’s ok, just keep allowing that connection.  Go with what you feel you have been given and know that he wants nothing more than to be their for you. You not only have God, you also have your guides, angels, spirit, even deceased loved ones that are there for you just waiting for you to ask for their assistance. The important point here is to be aware and to be stepping out in faith.

Connection or your intuition is like a muscle, if you don’t use it you lose it. Just start taking baby steps to reconnect.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that God desires a relationship with you. He wants you to talk to Him. And, He wants to talk to you. The Word (God Himself) tells us that this is true. If you wrestle with doubt, if you wonder whether or not God really cares so intimately about you that He longs to speak into your life, start by really allowing these truths from His word to wash over you to change your heart and mind.

He wants to talk to you. Trust me, you CAN hear His voice.

It may not be audible from outside of you, but it can be audible as if a small still voice is whispering in your head and the same is true for your team of guides, angels and deceased loved ones. They will find a way to communicate whether it is through speaking, number sequences, a song on the radio, a show that is on when you turn the TV on.

You know that isn’t even the channel you had it on, but the message is just what you needed to hear.

BE AWARE! This is how you receive messages from spirit. You may be driving down the road and get an overwhelming feeling to turn left when you were planning on going straight. Well, turn left! See if there isn’t something that you realize you needed to see.

At times we don’t know the WHY, perhaps a second after you turned off the other road there was an accident and you would have been involved in it. Just begin with small things, doing what you feel you are being led to do and then as that connection grows stronger you will see that you are being led to bigger and bigger answers and decisions through spirit.

Be Watchful

These are some of the greatest obstacles to hearing Spirit. Doubt, Pride (which comes from ego), Ego and Fear do all they can to stay in charge. To be in charge, they have to convince you that you are not hearing from spirit. These all cloud your ability to clearly hear God’s voice.

They “interrupt” the relationship. Don’t allow that to happen.

Be bold, step out and do what you feel you are being led to do and that knowing will grow stronger.

It’s not one or the other

“How do I know if what I’m hearing is God’s or my own voice?”

Our thoughts are not always His thoughts. If what you are getting would be hurtful, disrespectful or harmful to others then you know that is not the voice of Spirit or God. What you get from spirit brings peace, calm and love.

The voice of ego is loud, abrupt, brings chaos or a feeling of fear or unease.

So, how do we test the message we receive to know that it is indeed God we’re hearing? There are several ways:

Consult the Word

Being spirit led allows us to live a victorious life. It doesn’t mean things will always be easy. We don’t grow when we don’t go through things and learn the lessons we came here to learn, but still we live in victory.

He Confirms His Word

When you hear from the Lord, you will likely receive that same message again. It will be unmistakable. You will experience one of those, “Wait! Whoa!” moments we’ve all had. Confirmation can come by means of worship, blessings, signs and wonders, other believers, even trials. The Word tells us though that, “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.”

Matthew 18:16

Seek Peace and Pursue It

The voice of God will never, I repeat, never cause any of the following – fear, dread, anxiety, panic, confusion, the need to lie, worry, self-harm, or discord. If the voice you hear leads you into any of those areas, you can be CERTAIN you’ve either been influenced by your ego – period, end of story.

If you hear a voice that stirs up anything opposed to the fruit of the Spirit you can confidently turn and run straight the other direction. You can know beyond the shadow of a doubt that it was not God.

Now, will spirit lead us in ways that cause us to be stretched, convicted, even uncomfortably reliant? Absolutely. They will however, always be accompanied by a deep, all-consuming sense of peace that will steady you, calm you, uphold you, refresh and guide you.

The Holy Spirit

The Spirit is the One whom we were promised would help us know the voice of God. The Spirit is the Teacher, the Counselor, the One whom the Father sent to dwell within each of His children. Spirit helps teach and guide us.

If you find yourself struggling in recognizing God’s voice, simply ask Spirit to increase your ability. Ask for stillness that allows you to listen. Ask for the desire to seek and understand what is being given. And, ask for increase in your faith to clearly recognize and trust the voice of God.

You don’t have to go another day wondering if you were given the ability to hear from God. You were. Every child of God has been given the ability to hear, recognize and understand Him. Like most things in life though, getting really comfortable with that ability takes practice.
