Simple Practices to Overcome Emotional Trauma

Everywhere I look, I see emotional pain but also the energy has shifted and there is a much higher frequency of hope so now is the best time to start healing emotional baggage you have been carrying that may have seemed overwhelming, but what if it starts with just one small step?

Healing emotional trauma is like tending to a garden that’s been hit by a storm. At first glance, it might feel overwhelming seeing all the broken branches and uprooted plants. But with care, patience, and love, you can restore it, making it even more vibrant than before. Lets explore simple, gentle practices you can use to heal from emotional trauma and reconnect with yourself.

What Is Emotional Trauma?

Emotional trauma happens when something deeply upsetting or scary happens to you, and it’s hard to shake the feelings it leaves behind. Maybe it was an accident, a loss, or something someone said or did. These experiences can leave you feeling stuck, like you’re carrying around an invisible backpack full of heavy rocks.

Healing from trauma doesn’t mean forgetting what happened. It means learning how to take those rocks out of your backpack, one by one, until you feel lighter and freer. It’s a journey, and every small step you take is a win.

Start with Self-Compassion

Imagine you’re talking to a friend who’s had a tough time. You wouldn’t tell them to “just get over it” or criticize them for feeling sad, right? Treat yourself the same way. Healing begins with kindness toward yourself.

Take a deep breath. Put your hand on your heart and say, “It’s okay to feel this way. I’m doing the best I can.” Even if it feels a little awkward at first, this simple act of self-compassion can be a powerful way to start healing.

Connect with Your Body

Trauma doesn’t just live in your mind—it settles into your body too. That’s why moving your body gently can help you feel better. Try some of these practices:

Breathing Exercises: Sit or lie down somewhere comfortable. Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath in through your nose. Hold it for a moment, then let it out slowly through your mouth. Repeat this a few times, feeling your body relaxing more with each breath.

Stretching: Simple stretches, even something as simple as reaching your arms over your head or touching your toes, can help release tension and also stuck energy. Move slowly and notice how your body feels.

Walking: A gentle walk in nature can do wonders. Feel the ground under your feet and listen to the sounds around you—birds chirping, leaves rustling, or even the hum of traffic. It helps you stay present and grounded. The more you focus on each experience the more it is like a walking meditation.

Express Your Feelings

Keeping emotions bottled up can make them feel even heavier. Finding safe ways to express your feelings can be incredibly healing. Here are some ideas:

Journaling: Write down what you’re feeling without worrying about grammar or spelling. Let it flow onto the page. Sometimes, just seeing your thoughts written out can help you make sense of them. Reading them out loud also helps to release them and the energy associated with them.

Creative Arts: Paint, draw, or make music. You don’t have to be an artist; it’s about expressing yourself, not creating a masterpiece. Let it be imperfectly perfect just as each and every one of us are.

Talking: Share your feelings with someone you trust. It could be a friend, family member, or therapist. Sometimes, just being heard can lighten the load. If there is absolutely no one you feel you could say it too you could try recording yourself then listen back to it. Hearing it with a listening ear rather then in your thinking mind often shifts the energy of it and can give you a whole new perspective.

Create a Safe Space

When you’re healing, having a place where you feel safe and calm is important. This could be a cozy corner in your home with a soft blanket and your favorite books, or a quiet spot in a park. My favorite is in a warm, epsom and essential oil filled bathtub. Fill this space with things that make you feel good—a candle, a comforting scent, or photos of loved ones.

When you feel overwhelmed, spend time in your safe space. Let it remind you that you’re protected and cared for.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment without judgment. It helps you focus on what’s happening now instead of getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future.

One easy mindfulness practice is to sit quietly and notice five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This exercise helps ground you and brings you back to the present.

Let Yourself Rest

Healing takes energy, and it’s okay to take breaks. If you’re tired, let yourself rest. Take a nap, read a comforting book, or watch a favorite movie. Resting isn’t being lazy; it’s giving your body and mind the time they need to recover.

Forgive Yourself

It’s common to blame yourself for things that weren’t your fault or to feel like you should have done something differently. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you’re excusing what happened; it means you’re choosing to stop carrying the weight of blame and guilt.

Tell yourself, “I did the best I could with what I knew at the time. I forgive myself.” Even if it’s hard to believe at first, saying it can plant the seed of forgiveness in your heart

Celebrate Your Progress

Healing isn’t a straight line. Some days will feel easier than others. Celebrate the small victories, like getting out of bed, going for a walk, or smiling at something that made you happy. Every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. Make a list of what makes you happy and do more of it.

Final Thoughts

Healing emotional trauma takes time, and that’s okay. Be patient with yourself and remember that you’re not broken—you’re growing. Just like a garden after a storm, you have the strength to bloom again. You’re on a journey to rediscover the beautiful, whole, and resilient person you are.

Trust the process and take it one day at a time.
