Out-of-the-Box Rituals to Celebrate the Fall Equinox
The Fall Equinox is a powerful turning point in the year. It’s the day where day and night are almost equal. Afterward, the nights grow longer, and the days grow shorter. This moment marks the shift from summer’s bright, outward energy into autumn’s quiet, inward energy.
You can feel how this change affects not just the earth, but also your body, emotions, and spirit. The Fall Equinox is not just about cooler weather and falling leaves, it’s a sacred time for balance, release, and preparing for renewal.
The Fall Equinox has zodiac specific energies. This year the equinox is on Monday, September 22, 2025, and it begins Libra season. I want to share how these shifts in energy can affect you, and creative rituals you can use to celebrate in a deeper way.
What Is the Fall Equinox?
The word “Equinox” comes from Latin, meaning “equal night.” On this day, light and dark are balanced. After the Equinox, darkness begins to take the lead. This teaches you that balance doesn’t mean staying in the middle all the time. It means moving with the cycles of nature.
The Fall Equinox is about:
Harvesting: gathering what you planted earlier in the year, both in food and in life lessons.
Releasing: letting go of what you no longer need, like the trees letting go of their leaves. It’s a great time to fall clean and declutter.
Balancing: looking at your life and finding where you may need more rest, more joy, or more focus.
Zodiac Energy of the Fall Equinox
The Fall Equinox always happens when the sun moves into Libra. This is the sign of balance, fairness, and harmony. It’s about relationships, beauty, and finding peace between opposites.
How Libra energy may show up for you:
You may feel called to look at your relationships. Are they balanced? Do you give and receive in equal ways?
You may want to make your space more peaceful and beautiful.
You may feel the urge to slow down, reflect, and bring harmony into your daily routine.
When the earth shifts, you shift too. The Fall Equinox may bring changes in how you feel, think, and move.
Physically: You may notice changes in sleep, cravings for warm foods, or a need to rest more.
Emotionally: You may feel reflective, thoughtful, or ready to release old feelings.
Spiritually: You may feel more connected to nature, to cycles, and to your inner self.
If you align yourself with this energy, you’ll flow more smoothly through the season.
Out-of-the-Box Rituals for the Fall Equinox
Here are some unique ways to honor and celebrate this powerful shift. These practices go beyond the usual candles and gratitude lists they invite you to deepen your healing work.
Shadow Letter Burning
Write a letter to your “shadow self” the parts of you that hold fear, anger, or doubt. Thank these parts for what they have taught you, then release them by safely burning the letter outside. As the smoke rises, imagine yourself lighter and freer.
Energy Cord Releasing
Imagine cords of energy connecting you to people, habits, or situations that drain you. Visualize removing these cords with golden scoop, see yourself scooping out the root of the cord. Then place your hands over your heart and call your energy back to you. See the area where the cord was filling in with divine white light so there is no opening remaining.
Nature Offering Ritual
Go on a walk and gather natural items like leaves, stones, sticks, or acorns. Build a small mandala on the ground as a thank-you to the earth for her gifts. As you place each item, speak a word of gratitude.
Balance Walk
Find a straight line on the ground such as a log, curb, or even tape on the ground. Slowly walk along it, breathing deeply. As you balance your body, imagine balancing your life. With each step, release something heavy and welcome something new.
Moon and Sun Breath
On the night of the Equinox, sit outside and practice alternate nostril breathing. Breathe in through one nostril (moon energy), then the other (sun energy). This balances your inner light and dark, just like the Equinox does.
Harvest of Memories
Instead of only harvesting food, harvest memories. Write down your favorite moments from the past year and place them in a jar. On winter solstice, open the jar and reflect on the blessings that carried you through.
Sound Bath with Nature
Use singing bowls, drums, or even just your voice to make sound outdoors. Let the sounds echo into the earth. Imagine the vibrations carrying your prayers into the soil to rest over winter.
Ancestor Gratitude Table
Set a small table with photos, candles, and seasonal food to honor your ancestors. Speak aloud your thanks for their strength and guidance. This connects you to your roots during a time of letting go.
Equinox Mirror Ritual
Sit in front of a mirror with a candle. Look into your eyes and ask yourself, “What am I ready to release? What am I ready to welcome?” Speak the answers out loud. This simple act helps you honor.
These simple rituals or exercises help you smoothly transition into the fall equinox energies.
